Canada’s 150th Celebration – Upcoming Cross-Country Trip!
I’m a bad Canadian. After my trip to Halifax last March (see my posts Three days in Halifax and The Ocean – Montreal to Halifax by Train), I realized a shameful fact about myself. I’ve seen more of the USA than I have of my own country. I needed to remedy the situation, pronto! To celebrate Canada’s 150th, I’ll be going Coast to Coast by Train, Car, and Ferry over the next 60 days! I’ll also be visiting as many National and Provincial Parks, and of course Beaches, as I can along the way! I’m so excited!!!
My trip will be split into 3 legs:
- One week in Prince Edward Island
- Three weeks in Alberta and British Columbia (with brief stops in Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan)
- Two weeks in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia
Canada’s 150th
All over Canada, celebrations and activities are planned throughout the year. The crowning moment should be July 1, Canada Day.
Commemorative Currency
The Bank of Canada released a commemorative $10 banknote, expected to be available by Canada Day.
In addition, the Royal Canadian Mint also produced commemorative coins, including a silver coin with a face value of $10, a 2017 variant based on the Silver Maple Leaf coin.
Commemorative Stamps
All stamps produced by Canada Post during 2017 included references to the sesquicentennial.
Free National Park Access
Parks Canada will give away free passes to Canada’s national parks, historic sites, and marine conservation areas until the end of 2017.
In 2017, Parks Canada also launched the Red Chairs Experience. The government placed Twin Adirondack chairs bearing the special Canada 150 logo in each National Park.
Official Flower
The Canada 150 Tulip, also known as the Maple Leaf tulip, was selectively bred with an elegant white flower and red flames to resemble the flag of Canada.
Via Rail Canada 150 Youth Pass
One the most amazing perks of the 150th celebration was Via Rails’ Youth Pass. Anyone aged 12 to 25 could travel anywhere, anytime, in Economy Class, during the month of July.
